Sioux Falls woman starts mobile gym for exercising dogs

Chloe Koval is offering something new for dog owners in the Sioux Falls area. On The Run is Sioux Falls’ first mobile dog gym, operated out of a van, that allows dogs to exercise while their owners are away or busy.

Koval grew up on an acreage near Garretson and always had a lot of animals, including two big dogs.

“We always had the luxury of having them on our acreage,” Koval said. “But I realized when I moved to town after I graduated that many people’s dogs might not have that luxury.”

In January, Koval saw an Arizona business doing the same thing and thought it could be a great addition to the Sioux Falls community.

“Our winters are so cold and our summers can be really hot. Some people are really busy, others might have disabilities or injuries and they can't walk for time,” Koval said. “It can also be used as just supplemental exercise, so I just thought it'd be perfect for people in different seasons of life.”

The climate-controlled van has a treadmill in the back. A hook above the treadmill attaches to the dog’s harness, and it also tracks speed and distance.

The treadmill will also be dog-powered so the dogs can run or walk at whichever speed they choose, and they’ll be given water and bathroom breaks before and after the workout.

Dogs of all ages and sizes are welcome.

“I really love dogs and I'm excited to help people and give their dogs the enrichment and mental stimulation they need," Koval said, noting her two young daughters are excited to be part of the operation. "We don’t have dogs now because we’ve been so busy with all the life changes, so this is a great and fun way to still be around them.”

The rate is $50 for a one-time 30-minute run and $45/run for weekly sessions. It is $40/run for two or more sessions a week, and there will also be a discount for those with multiple dogs.

Koval said the owners have to be home for the first session to make sure everything goes smoothly, but after that she can exercise the dogs without the owner and will drive to the owner’s house.

“It’s a niche business for sure, but I do believe I’ll reach the right market,” Koval said. “And honestly, this is like a dream come true.”

Koval said her schedule is flexible but typically she’ll work during standard business days throughout the week but is open to evenings and weekends to meet people’s needs.
