Mysuru: “Screen addiction (Mobile phone), loneliness, cardiac ailments and sitting at one place for hours are the increasing causes of deaths “, opined Dr C N Manjunath Director of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, Bengaluru.
Manjunath delved into various health issues and their management during his interaction with journalists at Mysuru District Journalsits Association on Friday.
“Nowadays in India 50 per cent of the deaths are caused due to non-communicable diseases. Among them, screen addiction and loneliness are the most causes of deaths followed by cardiac problems, blood pressure and diabetes. What is more worrying is those below the age group of 45 years are becoming increasingly vulnerable to serious health issues. Their heart is not well as 30 per cent of cardiac arrests are common in that age group”, rued Manjunath.
Sitting at one place for hours without any activity is equal to the damage caused on health by smoking five cigarettes, explained Manjunath.
Smoking is also contributing to the ill health as 50 per cent of cardiac ailments are arising from tobacco and alcohol consumption. Besides, genetic problems are also leading to cardiac related health issues among the youngsters. In some cases we found similar blockages in both fathers and sons. It’s the hard truth about genetic diseases”, Dr Manjunath asserted.
The increasing pollution like air and soil pollution is also transforming the healthy into unhealthy.
Every 30 minutes delay in cardiac attack may increase the risk on life by seven per cent. That’s why the treatment in golden hour is very important, said Manjunath.
Road accidents are causing 13 per cent of the deaths. Hence there is a need to start a massive campaign on switching over to public transportation and the police should fix reflectors on priority as it may help in reducing the accidents. Most importantly It is in our hands to avoid accidents, Dr Manjunath added.
“My advise to people is to cultivate the habit of undergoing health check up once in every year, like we celebrate birthday and wedding anniversary. It is best advised to those male in the age group of 35 years and female of 45 years age group. They should better undergo ECG and treadmill test”, advised Manjunath.
Mysuru District Journalists Association President S T Ravikumar, Vice- Presidents Anurag Basavaraj and Dharmapura Narayan and General Secretary Subramanya were present.
