Tru Fit is now open at S.W. Military Drive and Zarzamora.

San Antonio's gym scene is adding extra weight with the opening of a new athletic brand club on Zarzamora. The artery of the Southside is now home to a Tru Fit Athletic Club. The Texas-based chain of gyms replaces a Gold's Gym that was housed in the shopping center at the corner of S.W. Military and Zarzamora for 25 years.

Gold's announced at the end of 2021 that the location would permanently close on December 2 because the landlord opted to not renew the lease. Since then, Tru Fit has been reworking the space to become a 40,000-square-foot fitness center. The location officially opened on Tuesday, May 10. Tru Fit also operates a gym further east at 165 S.W. Military Drive.

In the final days of Gold's, gym-goers like Felipe Sauceda told MySA that its location was important to the public health of the Southside community.

"I think losing the Gold's Gym on Military [has] a big impact on the community due to the fact that there are less gyms and work out facilities on the Southside," he told MySA. "The Gold's Gym on Military's vibe was incredible. Everyone is friendly, everyone was there for their reasons. However, overall I can tell we all had the same mindset."

Gold's Gym locations, with the exception of the Valley Hi and Brooks gyms, are all north of Highway 90.

Southsiders who prefer a gym close to home over loyalty to Gold's will find a list of amenities at Tru Fit including a sauna, women's workout spaces, child care, a turfed training area, a cycle studio, and more. Photos shared by the brand on Facebook show sections with free weights, squat racks, stair climbers, treadmills, agility ladders, bosu balls, and kettle balls.

Tru Fit offers tiered monthly membership levels, from basic to essentials to results. Prices range from $10 to $30.

The Southside's other commercial gym options outside of the Tru Fit brands include two Planet Fitness gyms. Fitness Connection, a national brand of low-cost gyms, is also planning a location at South Park Mall.
